Fire at Burnaby Sikh temple deemed suspicious

Tuesday morning fire at Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha community centre at 7271 Gilley Ave. in Burnaby has been termed as suspiscious by investigators.

Fire Department and Burnaby RCMP, both are investigating the fire incident besides another incident of fire few blocks away on Gilley Avenue early Tuesday morning.

The fire was noticed just before 2 a.m by two resident priests who called 911.

The fire had started outside by the loading dock before spreading to the roof and inside to the kitchen area. The blaze destroyed one of the Sikh temple's parade floats which was parked out back.

In all, seven fire trucks and 18 firefighters responded to the fire, which took about two hours to put out. Foreman estimated damage at "upwards of $100,000." There were no injuries.

Firefighters were also called to an abandoned house just a couple blocks away at 7412 Gilley Ave. at 6 a.m. Six fire trucks responded to the incident, which destroyed the home. There were no injuries. This incident too is being looked into by the fire and police investigators.
